History of the Teddy Bear
The history of the teddy bear dates back to the early 20th century. It is tied to the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The story goes that during a hunting trip in November 1902, Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been captured. The bear was tied to a tree by his hunting party, deeming it unsportsmanlike. The incident was caricatured in a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman. It was published in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902. The comic was titled "Drawing the Line in Mississippi."
Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn-based toy maker, saw the cartoon and got inspired to create a stuffed bear cub toy. He named it "Teddy's Bear" after President Roosevelt. Michtom sought and received Roosevelt's permission to use his name for the toy. The stuffed bear became an instant success.
